The Purpose of Comprehensive School Services
Today’s schools are challenged as never before by societal and family issues. Some of the common problems include family instability, time constraints in dual-career families, parents’ inadequacies in disciplining strong willed children, the alarming use of drugs and alcohol, which can begin in elementary school, and the often negative impact of the media and modern technology on students’ behaviors. These problems have placed increasing demands upon schools. Understandably, many administrators and faculties would rather keep family problems separate from the school environment. However, it has become clear that this is not possible. Unless students’ emotional and family problems are addressed, they are unlikely to achieve in school. Teachers and administrators must be able to respond appropriately to these issues, or they risk becoming ineffective in today’s schools.
Comprehensive School Services was developed to address the needs of the total school environment: students, parents, teachers and administrators. However, it is our belief that change, whether it be on the part of the student, parent, teacher or administrator, does not result from a single intervention. Change develops from a continuing mix of professional education, peer reinforcement, and support. Our program focuses on helping schools develop a collaborative approach between school personnel and families, in order to resolve problematic situations. The result is academic and behavioral success for the student.
