Comprehensive School Services

All of our school based services are aimed at changing school climate by promoting safety, civility and respect.

Some schools may choose to use our services in a comprehensive way based on our Changing School Climate model. While following the model, described below, they will also use many of the other specific services described on this page, such as a Care Team and parent training.

Other schools may not desire the Changing School Climate model at this time. Schools are always welcome to pick and choose the specific services that they would like to utilize. We specialize in tailoring our services to meet each school's specific needs. Below are some of the services that we frequently provide within school systems.

. Changing School Climate Model

Today, schools have many programs in place that attempt to change the overall climate of the school. Too frequently, these programs involve a value-of-the-week kind of format emphasized by posters on the walls and sporadic lessons, but failing to truly integrate into the core essence of the school. WCPA's Changing School Climate is more than a program, poster or lesson. It is the process by which schools identify their fundamental values and mission and then require that every person within the school lives out this mission every day. Consultation is provided to the school's lead administrator every step of the way, as the school is molded into a place of safety, civility and respect.

. Care Team Training and Consultation

Care Teams are one of the most effective methods for responding to schools' needs. A Care Team is a group composed of diverse school professionals, which intervenes in problematic school situations. When an at-risk student is referred to the Care Team, team members gather information about the situation, plan and implement appropriate interventions, and continue monitoring the circumstances, if necessary. The WCPA consultant first trains the team members, then functions as a leader and professional resource for the group.

. On-Site, Educational Consultation
An on-site consultant functions as school counselor or supplements a school's existing counseling staff, and is usually purchased for a block of time each week. The consultant's tasks often include observation of students or classrooms, brief counseling with students, communication with families, and consultation with teachers and administrators.

. Presentations and In-services

We frequently provide in-service education for school professionals. Presentations on a variety of issues are available, and length can vary from one hour to full-day workshops. Frequently requested topics include: Creating a Bully-Free School , Understanding Self-Esteem, Dealing with Difficult Parents, Understanding ADHD, and Substance Abuse Prevention. Schools are always free to request any topic of their choice.

. Principal's Consultation Groups
Principals meet monthly, in small groups, led by a WCPA consultant. In group, principals present individual cases about students, families, staff, or policy, share support, and resolve problems that group members are having within their schools. All information shared is strictly confidential.

. Case Consultation
Case consultation is available, when a school wants assistance with decision making about a particular student. The consultant can observe the student, meet with the teachers involved and/or the student's family, and provide specific recommendations about classroom interventions and actions that parents can take regarding assessment and/or treatment.

. Substance Abuse Services

Prevention services, at-risk groups and recovery groups can be facilitated in school. Individual assessment and a treatment program are available in the office. Both hair and urine drug testing is available, on an individual basis or as part of a systematic random testing program in a school.

KIDSTAR is an exciting role-playing program. WCPA consultants work with entire classrooms, acting out scenarios and processing the feelings and issues that arise. Frequently requested topics include: Values (e.g. drugs or bullying), Feelings, Manners and Decision Making.

. Parent Education

Research shows that parent education can improve parenting skills, increase cooperation with the school and reduce the risk for school violence. WCPA offers a series of educational presentations for parents. Interesting topics are presented at each meeting, such as improving disciplinary skills, lowering kids' stress levels, and collaborating with the school.  Schools and parent groups are always free to request any topic of their choice.

. Social Skills Training Groups

WCPA therapists work with groups of at-risk students, who need help to learn appropriate social skills and behaviors. Students are grouped by age, and meet regularly. After 6-8 sessions, group membership can be reassessed. During group, specific skills are taught, such as: basic social skills and manners, conflict resolution, anger management, making friends, and coping skills. Social skills groups are available at the WCPA office, and can also be provided in the school. Schools choosing to provide these groups on-site may designate the topics on which the groups will focus.

. Risk Assessment
Schools concerned about the potential for dangerous behavior by a particular student can refer that student for a comprehensive risk assessment. With parental permission, the student and his or her family are interviewed, the teacher or relevant school professional is contacted, and a battery of psychological testing is performed. A written report is then provided to the school, outlining the therapist's impressions.

. Psychoeducational and Psychological
Testing

Psychoeducational testing is offered for intellectual functioning (IQ), academic achievement, learning disabilities, emotional problems and ADHD. A full battery of psychological tests is available for students of all ages.  All testing services include a timely, written report, as well as specific recommendations for the client and his or her family and/or school.

In addition, a diagnostic team can conduct a Comprehensive Student Assessment. The assessment includes an observation of the student in the classroom, consultation interviews with teachers and parents, psychological and/or educational testing, and a thorough written report with a feedback session for parents and school staff.
